We've been running pinball map for well over a decade, and over these many years we have received a lot of criticism. We have never looked at fb or pinside so have no clue what people are saying on there (which is great! turns out it doesn't matter what people are saying). But people will send direct messages telling us something sucks, or arguing endlessly that we should make the site work precisely for their one particular case. It has been stressful at times. But! By being responsive and trying not to argue (or something), and by continuing to work and care, it kind of seems like the tides turned a little. Lately we have people writing us JUST to say that they appreciate our work! It's very nice.
Anyway, we like Nudge. You have something of a target audience - but because of the net, folks outside that audience have a very simple way to barf their thoughts onto you.
You’re right - your critics/haters will always seem to be far more vocal than your supporters. Not sure why that is, I guess some people just love to hate. Keep in mind that your demographic for pinball entertainment is inclusive of old farts that still have a hard time figuring out how they got on an email mailing list in the first place (they’ll probably tell you they were “hacked”). It’s also inclusive of some of the most socially inept folks on the planet. Like we say: That’s pinball, baby!
Let me take a quick second to be a vocal supporter: your weekly emails kick ass and The Nudge helps makes pinball cool again. For some of us, it helps bridge the gap between a shitty 9-5 and our favorite hobby we can’t wait to get back to this weekend. Pinball is such a niche and weird hobby (he said proudly) and it’s REFRESHING to have someone jot down funny insights about the scene. Player tropes, machine era rankings, getting into someone’s head in a match - all seriously brilliant. You take the hobby seriously without taking it seriously. Anyone trying to be harshly critical about what you’re doing needs to find a different hobby, or at least a different bowl of cereal to piss in.
In the meantime, I really hope you continue doing this for as long as you can, despite the weirdos. I look forward to a Nudge email every week for a little chuckle and the feeling of kinship - something that can be hard to find in a hobby of this size.
